Fantail Conservation - Zealandia

Every adult Fantail/pīwakawaka t-shirt sold gives $5 to the Zealandia Sanctuary to continue their amazing efforts to provide a safe haven for native birds in the heart of Wellington. 

"ZEALANDIA is a ground-breaking conservation science project first facility fully-dedicated to telling New Zealand’s unique conservation story. Their 225ha sanctuary valley, nestled within the hills of Wellington, provides a safe haven for many of our precious native species, such as little spotted kiwi, tuatara, hihi, saddleback, and plenty more. The entire sanctuary is protected from introduced mammalian pests such as possums, stoats, ferrets, cats, and rats by an 8.6km long pest proof fence – the first of it’s kind.

Over it’s 20 year history, ZEALANDIA has been involved in the reintroduction of several native species to the area, some of which, such as the little spotted kiwi, hihi, and saddleback, were previously extinct from mainland New Zealand for generations.

Along with this all important conservation and restoration work, ZEALANDIA also acts as an conservation education facility, teaching thousands of visitors a year about the importance of our unique and bio-diverse environment and how we can all play our part in protecting it."
