Honu/leatherback sea turtle Conservation

Five of the seven species of marine turtles – Green, hawksbill, leatherback, olive ridley and loggerhead – travel throughout the Pacific and through Aotearoa New Zealand’s waters.  They desperately need our help, and WWF-New Zealand is working hard to protect and restore the ocean they live in. WWF is advocating for the following:

More marine protected areas both in New Zealand and the wider Pacific, and for New Zealand to implement its commitment to protect 30% of the ocean by 2030;

A global plastic treaty to reduce the amount of plastic pollution flowing into the ocean; 

Making fisheries more sustainable, including reducing the threat of species being caught accidentally in fishing nets (known as ‘bycatch’);

And Nature-based solutions to climate change, including restoring vital marine ecosystems.
