North Island Kōkako Conservation

To celebrate the return of the North Island kōkako, Sanctuary Mountain® Maungatautari collaborated with the Tumbleweed whanau who designed a new t-shirt representing this milestone.

After a 30-year absence we now have at least 40 kōkako on the maunga with a recent round of monitoring showing an additional five un-banded kōkako. The lyrical, haunting sound of kōkako will be heard once again on Maungatautari!
Many hands were involved in this effort and it wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity of our volunteers and donors, the support from the translocation team, led by kōkako expert, Dave Bryden, along with the gifting of the bird by Ngāti Rereahu. This tee is a dedication to them and all the good work they’ve done and continue to do.
