The Mōhua/Yellowhead is a protected threatened endemic species once commonly found in forests throughout the South Island of New Zealand. Introduced rats and stoats lead to large declines in mōhua numbers and confined them to fragmented patches of beech forest but mōhua are prolific breeders, and when predator numbers are controlled they can thrive.
